It's crunch time for my dear friend and fellow artist, Nadine LaFond! Nadine is currently working on her debut solo album and needs our help. I'm proud to announce two great events coming up at Alluem Yoga in support of Off the Mat Into the World! Every year Off the Mat holds what is called a Global Seva Challenge to support a country in need. The focus for 2011 is Haiti. Gina, my dear friend and owner of Alluem Yoga, is participating in the Seva Challenge to raise $20,000 through collaborating with the local community. Upon reaching the fund raising goal, she will embark on the Bare Witness Tour, a journey to Haiti where she will spend two weeks working directly with the organizations the funds support. We are currently at $16,000 and have until December to raise the rest! We have hopes that the upcoming art events will bring us to our goal!
The first is The Art of Yoga with Gina and Nadine LaFond:
Let art and yoga collide!!! Join us at Alluem Yoga for an afternoon of art and yoga. Begin moving and stretching on your mat through gentle yoga poses with Gina to release, relax and open up your creative channels. Relax the mind and body so you can easily tap into your artistic self, free from judgement, accepting all that is. Be inspired by Nadine, the talented Haitian American visual artist, and allow her to guide you through the process of telling your own visual story. Bring a picture of an object, person or place that holds strong meaning to you. Transfer that image through your own expression onto canvas. (Bring your favorite medium, or borrow ours. Somaly Mam

My latest work came to me the minute I finished The Road of Lost Innocence (The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine) by Somaly Mam. The book was intense and I often had to take breaks to stomach it all...but I've never read a book that fast in my life. Somaly Mam's life story is one of horror, pain and torture, but it is also a story of hope, determination and love. Somaly is a global hero changing the lives of women and children all over the world. I was originally introduced to the Somaly Mam Foundation by Heather Snyder and Amber Tawn of Off the Mat NYC. I attended a beautiful yoga class and kirtan at Dharma West dedicated to Somaly. We prayed for the millions of women and children who suffer from human trafficking, celebrated the ones that have escaped, and remembered the ones who have not survived. This is truly a global crisis. It opened up my eyes. Up until two weeks ago, I had been a Blackberry lover. I swore I would never give up my key board. I didn't care what all the other kids were doing...I stood strong with my phone! "Look at your small screen," they would say. "It's so cute!!" Ha! The only thing that made me secretly jealous inside...the photography apps. (I have a soft spot for photography, thanks to my dad and his old school camera collection.) Sure, I could take pictures with my camera and send them over to Photoshop and doctor them up myself...but with the iPhone there were so many options!!! Instant gratification right there on your phone! So, I finally caved. I got an iPhone...and I must say, I love it.

First stop, Instagram - a quick and easy with a variety of filters.

My very first shot was my dog, of course.

Next, Hipstamatic - brings back the look and feel of those plastic cameras from the past. With the swipe of your finger, you can change your lens, your flash, your film to create the look you want. So hip.

Then, Pinhole HD. It was the first ever camera constructed by the ancient Greeks. Embrace purposeful blurriness, extreme saturation, and darkened margins.

And this is just the beginning. The other night, my photography loving friend, Steve, introduced me to iPhoneography.com - an awesome site put together by Glyn Evans for the iPhone photographer in you. He reviews almost all photography apps as well as tips and tricks. It's great! Be prepared for this blog to be filled with all sorts of awesome shots that can be uploaded faster then you can say "one hour photo". And to think, I spent how much time in that dark room in college trying to create these same effects?? Gotta love technology.

You have to make time for these things.

May I have your attention please....I did it! I've been itching to paint and definitely did not get enough beach days in this summer. Well, guess what - I finally took a day for myself and my art at the beach! Big deal, you say? This takes effort, people. Just me, my watercolors, and my journal. Bliss. Although, when I got to the beach I realized that I would be dealing with some of the leftovers from Hurricane Irene. The boardwalk was broken and the beach was shortened due to the high tides. The Bulldozer was out pushing sand around beeping every time it backed up and shooting smoke out the top. Not my ideal situation, but I wasn't letting it wreck my day! I sat on the jetty, took out my watercolors, brushes, journal, and use the ocean as my wash cup. I stuck my headphones in, put my iPod on shuffle and enjoyed the sunshine. Life is good.

There is a new class at Alluem Yoga and tonight was the big debut: Body Prayer.
The description: Let yoga be more than a physical practice. Explore the effects of yoga on the mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Our bodies speak volumes. Flow with grace and strength as you offer up your intentions and vibrations into the universe. Prayer is the act of communicating with something bigger than ourselves. What ever that something is for you, connect through movement and prayer. Pray for peace. Pray for happiness. Pray for serenity. Pray for your loved ones and those in need. Come with an open mind and an open heart.

This class with Gina was amazing. When you add intention with the physical art of movement you find yoga to be, you open in a way that you may not have on a normal basis. Your mind and your heart connect. Your thoughts have meaning. Your body moves with integrity. Everything seems to align. Being on your mat makes you feel complete.
I thought my night was complete when I bowed my head to my heart after the final Om. I could sleep soundly after that moving mediation for sure! Then I came home and found a post from my brother...you have to watch the video below. My jaw dropped...

This is David Garibaldi. (http://garibaldiarts.com/) I like to think his "performance" type painting style is much like a moving meditation - a moving prayer - a lot like yoga. I know for myself, when I'm creating a piece of art or deeply involved with a sketch with pencil moving quickly across the page like it has a mind of it's own, I get lost in the art...just like I do when I'm on my mat practicing. It's the best feeling. To watch someone else get immersed in that same feeling almost feels wrong! Like you're stealing a personal moment! Ha! Then again, David is a "performance" artist - and his hope is to inspire the audience to use their passion to benefit and inspire others. After all, we are here for one another...we inspire one another.

Whether you're stepping on to your mat or in front of an empty canvas...it's all about quieting down and looking inside - for your inspiration, for your voice, for your passion...it's about finding that stillness inside and then exploding out with thoughts, prayers, and intentions of love, peace, serenity, hope, and inspiration. That is what David Garibaldi calls "Living with passion and purpose." I can't wait for next week's Body Prayer to practice with that same passion and purpose. (Mondays 7:30-8:45pm)

Awakening the Artist

Funny how things fall right into your lap, just when you need them...or as Sean Corne would call them: Everyday Miracles. They're everywhere. As I'm thumbing through my latest issue of Yoga International, I came to the article titled "Awakening the Artist" by Karen Macklin. Ha! And there it was right in the subtitle - "No matter what kind of art you call your own, your yoga practice can more fully connect you with your creative mind, body, and soul." Just as I was stating in my previous posts. Yoga is a gift to artists. "Asana and pranayama (that's movement and breath work for you non-yogis) help fuel the creative process by increasing and directing the flow of prana, the intelligent life force, through the energy conduits in our body." This is true for all types of art - visual, performance, writing, culinary - wherever creative motives are intact. "By mindfully observing and inspecting the full range of our experience on and off the mat, we pave the way to creating more authentic and nuanced art." Yoga is such an empowering tool for all aspects of your life...and not that I needed reassurance that it is an supportive tool for the creative part of you, but since it's out there and has been on my mind, let's go ahead and embrace this article!

What are your goals? What are your passions? Where do you see your talents best served?

These were some questions posed to me this weekend by a very good friend who's opinions I highly value and accept with my whole heart. I will be honest however, my head was spinning and I was taken aback when posed with these questions as I have just started off on my latest path into teaching children's yoga. I've dove head first into my yoga practice and I love love love every second of it. It brings me joy and fills me in a way I haven't been filled in quite sometime. I am happy - with the choice I have made, with the way I spend my everyday, with the support I am able to offer, with the gift of this practice I can share with children. I am on the right path for certain.

Then she asked, Have you lost sight of your art?

To that I answer no. While I don't get to create as much as I would like to, as much as I used to - outside of a crate here and a mural there, I believe I am always in the artist frame of mind no matter what I am doing. She remembers me in college as someone who was always in the studio or on the floor creating my next project. It used to pour out of me. Now I find myself in another kind of studio and yet I am able to see the parallel. There is art in my life no matter what I am type of studio I am in.

Art, like many things, like yoga, is a practice. It is constant. It is everywhere. You live it, you breathe it, it is part of you. The things you are born with will never leave you. It is a gift you hold that grows with you - constantly evolving - ever changing.

Recently it comes in spurts - I get inspired and I want to create. These days, as life has gotten busy and as I adjust to this new route, it has been inside a journal of personal exploration. It comes in small sketches and words unspoken. It is small and that is okay. Right now, it is what it is and I trust it is right where it should be.

And just when I have the need for more, I stumble upon some great inspiration...tonight I've found Aelita Andre. She is a 3 year old professional abstract painter from Australia. Next month she will be holding a solo show in NYC...and it won't be her first solo show. I am in awe.

Watching this video below (several times), you can see there is more then just playing with paint that is happening here. I see something there that I've seen in very few children as I've watched them create their own art (as I often include art in my children's yoga classes). There is true comfort in what is being created - a sense of non-attachment to the outcome - seemingly no fear of judgement - an abundance of acceptance. It is not forced. It is accepted as is. It is right where it should be. It is beautiful.

I'm feeling it...the creative bug. It's back and I'm loving it. Maybe it's because I've been tripping over some amazing artists (who I will be blogging about soon)...maybe it because I see more art happening in my near future.

You may know that last year I left my corporate position in NYC (and stepped down into a part time position in NJ) to follow my heart as a children's yoga instructor at Alluem Yoga in Cranford, NJ. As I've watched the Alluem Kids program bloom into something amazing, I've seen a change in myself as well. I've grown closer to this practice and have found an amazing peace in my heart. I see the best come out in me every time I step on my mat to share the practice with children who are eager to learn, eager to grow, eager to relax and find peace. I am lucky. I am honored. I am grateful.

This past week I took another step...I gave my 2 weeks notice at my part time job to step into the roll of a full-time yogi at Alluem. This was my goal, this was my dream...this I did not expect to happen within 8 months of leaving the city. Honestly, I think I was at first in shock. I let go, I trusted and it happened. I am in a place where I can be myself, be at peace, be inspired, and hopefully making a difference in the lives of others along the way.

I. am. so. lucky.

I am an artist at the core. The best thing for an artist is to be an environment that inspires you to create. For me to have the luxury of being in a historical mill that houses a yoga studio and is bordered by a river is unbelievable. And to be surrounded by students and teachers who are positive, uplifting, and non-judgmental is just an added bonus! The more time I spend there, the more I want to create, share and give back through my practice and my art. It's all connected.

I came across a quote the other day - "Don't wait until you know who you are to make things happen." So true. When you let go of the what ifs, the I'm not sures and the who am I questions, you discover a layer of yourself you never knew existed. Embrace it. Share it. Make things happen.

My Godson loves dinosaurs! Some of his favorite books are the "How Do Dinosaurs..." series by Jane Yolen. The illustrations by Mark Teague served as the inspiration for the dino-riffic mural. Staten Island Yoga Art Auction

This Wednesday, June 23rd, is the Art Auction and Satsang devoted to raising money for Bal Ashram, Baba Hariji's orphanage in Varanasi, India. Richard Humphrey has done an amazing job of pulling this all together and there is much inspiring art work to choose from. The art work will be on display at Shakti Yoga in Staten Island starting at 1 PM on Wednesday. Bids can be made in person at Shakti or by email to richard@redcloudmobile.com. Bidding will end at 7:30 PM and winning bidders will be notified after the evening Satsang or by email/phone.

I believe I've mentioned before that I teach children's yoga on the weekends at Alluem Yoga...you can check out my kid's blog at www.alluemkids.blogspot.com. Yoga is a huge part of my life. It was introduced to me during one of the hardest points of my life in my early adulthood and I've stayed with the practice ever since. It's taught me to breathe, to let go, to listen to my body, and to live in the moment. I recommend to everyone to give it a try at least once!

So, some of my art has incorporated the yogic feel...most recently, I did a piece I call "Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu" (which is painted around the perimeter of the painting). This quote is a common closing mantra that translates to, "May all beings everywhere be filled with peace, joy, love, and light." The painting was used for the "Grab Bag" at the Holiday Party for the yoga studio. One of my fellow teachers "won" it and I hear it's already up and hanging in her home! It was a popular gift and I've been working on more paintings to go with that series. I'm almost done with the second, but here is the first one...

She recently started a blog, which she describes best as her chance to stop sweating the small stuff and appreciate what she has. She hopes that through her blog, her Type A-self can learn to live, laugh, and love life. Kudos to her for taking the time each day to breathe, look around, and live in the moment. Her entries are humorous and make me smile. I make sure that I read them at work when I most need to laugh (at my 9-5 desk job at that-place-that-shall-remain-nameless, Inc. Not my yoga job or my illustration job. Man, I have too many jobs.).
I must say, I do try to stay pretty positive most of the time, but sometimes being stuck at this desk in the drama of corporate city life really gets me down. I was looking around my desk today, I took the time to notice how the sun was hitting my snow globe on my window sill - granted it's a snow globe with a sad looking man stuck in the lonely middle from The New Yorker Cartoon - "Snow Shoveler". But none-the-less, I thought, "There's a great picture!". So I snagged it, proud of the outcome. I'll use it as a reminder to remember to see the light even through the most depressing situations...much like my cousin is doing now...and maybe I'll get a happier snow globe.

The holiday market is set-up in Union Square! I love seeing handmade vendors come together. There is great stuff out there this year and A LOT of new booths!

I spotted a great jewlery designer by the name of Astrid Schumacher. She's a yoga practioner, so a lot of her designs have a yogic feel to them - Om symbols, mandalas, malas, etc. Her jewlery can be found in small shops in NYC, SanFransico, and Switzerland (where she was born).

There's a new knitter in town! She goes by the name "Lefty Loops" (aka Tara Connell) and her specialty is keeping your baby's head warm! Some great designs by artist Matthew Langille fell into my lap the other day that put a smile on my face, so I had to share! The ever popular watch company Swatch is currently featuring Matthew Langille's illustrations on their watches - including Snuggle Bunch, Germaholic, and Floating Away.

I would totally pair up the Snuggle Bunch Watch with jeans, tee shirt, and some Chuck Taylors, but the Germaholic is definitely little black dress approved. You can see more of Matthew's energetic drawings on products for Havianas and Marc Jacobs.

I've been commissioned to do a mural for a 16 year old Hibiscus Flower lover. She seems pretty down to earth, yet trendy, so I want to design something really cool for her. Something fun, but something she can go through her teens without it getting dorky, ya know? She wants it to be a border so she can still clutter up her walls with posters and pictures like teens are supposed to do. She likes pink, orange, and yellow against the blue green base color she has now. I'm thinking I like the white flower design with a pink, orange, and yellow outline so it's not so overpowering. So here is my inspiration so far...

I'm back from my 3 week hiatus...things have been crazy to say the least, but that's not why I'm writing!
You may or may not know that I've been training to become a Children's Yoga Teacher. I studied with Little Flower Yoga in NYC under the direction of Jennifer Cohen. Jennifer and the other teachers at Little Flower are a constant light and inspiration to me, as well as the kids they teach day in and day out. While time and scheduling does allow me to teach along side them in the city as much as I would love to, I have connected with another amazing life force.

Gina Pachkowski, who got her training at the same school I practice, The Yoga and Healing Center in Scotch Plains, NJ, has been working diligently to open a studio of her own. Well, this weekend her dream is coming true!! Alluem Yoga will soon become the sanctuary to many in Cranford, NJ!

Located at 347 Lincoln Avenue East, otherwise known as The Historic Droescher's Mill on the Rahway River, is one of the most beautiful historical buildings I have ever stepped foot in. It's naturalistic feel emits peace and serenity unlike any other stand alone yoga studio I've seen. And not to be partial since I'm one of them, but the teachers who will be instructing at this studio are all simply amazing human beings. Gina has truly pulled together a great group to help create a supportive and nurturing environment for all of the future students!
The Open House begins tonight from 5-8pm with a Free Chair Yoga class from 6-7pm with Eileen Michie. Tomorrow the building will be open to view from 10am-2pm with a free Vinyasa Flow style class from 10-11am with Gina. Sunday will be open the same hours with a free Kid's Yoga class from 10-10:45am with me. So stop by whenever you can this weekend to tour the studio, meet the teachers, and to take a free class!

Remember in elementary school when you learned how to write? Printing first, then script? I hated script. I remember trying to get out of a writing lesson in 3rd grade after I fell and scraped my elbow on the playground. I said I needed to print because writing in script hurt my elbow. Good try, me.

I haven't journaled in an actual journal in quite some time thanks to the blog (everybody's doing it), but I just may have to start filling pages again after seeing this journal. I'm pretty sure that Chronicle Books is trying to bring back the art of writing sans the internet, and maybe improve journal sales along the way.

My New Mantra

The Keep Calm and Carry On motivational poster was produced in 1939 during the beginning of World War II, and was a "last case scenario" to be used only should the Nazis succeed in invading Great Britain, in order to stiffen resolve. Two-and-a-half million copies were printed, although the poster was distributed only in limited numbers. The designer of the poster is not known.

I'm back! It's been so long since my last blog...but I've been busy and travelling! I spent some time in Washington, DC with my best friend and her family. We were just in time for the peak of the Cherry Blossom Festival. Look how beautiful it was:
I recommend you go and see it if you are in the area. I also recommend you head over to the National Zoo! I don't get to too many zoos these days, but this one was huge and well set up. My shot of the day was of the tiger, who popped his head out long enough to sneak a few shots.I would have loved to take some time to sketch in both these parts, but we were on the go most of the time. I did however, find time to do headstands with all the National Monuments in DC. :) Here's a sampling:

My favorite illustrator of all time, Peter Reynolds, is releasing his latest title: The North Star and I couldn't be more excited!! I just read an advanced copy and I fell in love with it! It so beautifully portrays how we seek out our own paths in life to reach our full potential as an indivdual. A great message for children.

I have a small addiction to Photo Booths. I have a collection of them that were just taped all over my wall. I decided to put some order to my wall and put my collection on to a cork board (I also have a small obsession with cork boards). The oldest ones towards the top, are of my Grandmother in 1943 with her friends on the night they went to see Perry Como. There is also one from the 50s of my mom and my uncle and there are some shots from the 70s of my parents. The more recent ones are towards the bottom of me and my friends and cousins. The one in the middle is my favorite, hence why I blew it up. (Don't be fooled...I wasn't in a giant phot booth or anything.) It's of me and 3 of the 4 Cadden kids I used to babysit back in my college days. They are so adorable and just welcomed a 5th Cadden to their family! I'll have to see if we can ALL fit in the photo booth next summer. ;-) So much fun, so many memories.

Mustard

I'm a fan of mustard...the condiment and the color. I mean, who isn't? I have a sweater that has inspired me to bring more mustard into my work - the color, not the condiment. I've come up with this so far...the birds are confident because they are parading on mustard - the color, not the condiment. Hearts float around them because they are in love with mustard - the color and the condiment. In fact, they are thinking, if they had a bottle of Gulden's Spicy Brown right now, they would devour it, but would be sure not to get it on their white feathers.
